Famous for its rich natural resources and cultural diversity, Yunnan is home to over 150 ethnic peoples. The name Yunnan has been in use since the region was made a province under the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty (1206–1368). Literally meaning “South of the Yun,” it denotes the location as south of the Yun Range (Yun Ling, “Cloudy Mountains”). With an area of 168,400 square miles (436,200 square km) and a population of (2010) 45,966,239 Yunnan remains one of the most fascinating and adventurous regions in China. 

Boasting more wildlife and biodiversity than all of the rest of China combined, the province harbors botanical wonders still being discovered to this day. Many of these great treasures, including tea, have long traveled the 'Tea Horse Road' which extends from Pu-erh City to the mountains of Tibet and beyond.
